Have you ever wondered why some people can simply eat and eat and eat and their body does not seem to be affected? Or why you are maybe not a person to eat breakfast? Preferring spicy food or on the contrary not being able to stand it, at all? Are you jumping diets in order to achieve some self-set goal for your body? Or a you simply curious to get to know what it actually means to live a “healthy life”?
In the course of the current education I am taking on body and mind balance and healing its disorders, I have intensified my studies into Ayurveda. I have decided to create a series of posts helping you to understand what it is, how you can use it and how to implement it into your life. So stay tuned and share! 🙂
What is Ayurveda?
The ancient Vedic science of Ayurveda (“science of life”) is strongly connected to yoga in the pursuit of a healthy body and mind. Its focus lies on the body and moreover on the appropriate lifestyle. But what does it really mean?
Society, ads and social media usually give us a very distinct display on what to eat or not, on how to exercise and what to do for self-care. I have always been wondering (like many people before me, too) how it could possibly suit everyone, since each single human being on this planet has a very individual and unique body, constitution and health background. And that’s were the ayurvedic system can help us!
Ayurveda recognises that our world constitutes of different elements: water, fire, earth, air and ether (or space) – which can be also found in traditional Chinese medicine and many other Eastern philosophies. Everything surrounding us is made of these five elements, e.g. even our bodies and minds. Two elements are being summarised into what is called “Dosha” or constitution and in Ayurveda there are three different ones:
Vata, Pitta and Kapha
Each individual has all three Doshas, since our bodies consist of all elements available. What distinguishes us is simply the proportion of the Doshas. Usually people have one or two dominant Doshas, which then can be seen in their physicality, mentality and digestion. And here comes the nice part:
Depending on your Doshic constitution, you can easily detect what would be beneficial to eat or do in order to get yourself in balance, and what to stay away from in order to not get into imbalance. So by knowing your Dosha(s), you have a map to navigate towards health and balance 🙂 .
What this also implicates is that a continuos state of imbalance will ultimately lead to disease or better dis-ease (when you are out of “ease”). That’s why Ayurveda can even help you to release chronic issues or pains you are suffering from.
